In Service to Serviceberry

Normaltown in Athens, GA

My morning was spent

Stealthily spreading serviceberry seeds

Around Normaltown

Like some native plant obsessed Eddie Serviceberryseed

I rolled the juice around my mouth

Touched my tongue to my fingers

Ran tips across my lips

To find the seeds

Small

Ant-sized

They stayed suspended on my thumb until I found the right spot

And then flicked them gently

Into gardens

And abandoned lots

And the last few fragrant blooms of star jasmine stopped me in my steps

Intoxicating in its scent

As described by Claude back in Natchez

The invasives aren’t always all bad

I found more meaning in these few minutes

These short steps

Than hours toiling away in front of a laptop
