Old Salem, NC
Following along
The path of the black dog
From the night before
Cemetery side
Under pale moonlight
I lost them at darkened crossroads forevermore
I hope they found their way home
Perhaps to her,
The world’s key-bearer
Three-faced and three-parted
Never for the faint-hearted
Guardian of the crossroads and travelers uncharted
Last night’s darkened dreams of multi-locked doors were in fear and in dread
I spend this morning among the sunlit rolling hills of the dead
Trying to retrace momentarily mythic moonlit meanderings
To find Canada geese with beakfuls of dew-dropped grasses as wild offerings
Surrounded by cemetery slabs of horizontal marble carvings
I come here to soak up the sun on this crisp autumn full-moon morning
