Winston Salem, NC
My morning mind is filled with ideas of block universes and transubstantiated time
Collapsing colonies and fruitless philosophers carving up fate with their liminal lines
All devising Sisyphean systems in the face of a faceless eternity
I am no different watching it all unfold from the sidelines of modernity
But on this bright day, certain fleeting thoughts do feel true, if not momentarily
And I find proof in the cigarette-smoking world around me
Kate Spade continuing on from the grave
And Anthony Bourdain’s volatile adventures maintained
By ghosts of the present, all concerned with the past
If only we can become symbols, then maybe we can last
Though we do last forever; it’s the thoughts that hold us back
While we are not and never have been separate from nature,
The mere idea that we’re not locks us in like failed legislators
Doomed to pile law upon law and thought upon thought
In an attempt to give structure to something whose needs weren’t ever fraught
Grant me blissful serenity and dissolve my identity
Unshackle the chains that hold my mind in place
Let me peer into not just the other side but all sides up front
And see the universe as it truly is:
Everything, everywhere, all at once
